Let’s exchange the gray of the SE Michigan in winter for the sweet warm air, smell of fresh soil, and the sounds of the babbling koi pond in Graye’s Greenhouse.
Join me for all four Sundays to make some beautiful, botanically inspired art.
All the materials you need for the classes are included
Each class includes one plant valued at $6.00. If you would like a more expensive plant, or just more plants! - they will be available for purchase during class.
The classes will be limited to 12 participants, so there will be plenty of time to receive individual help.
You will leave the class with your painting and and a special participant packet including color handouts and a beautiful gift box.
February 20
Botanical drawing with pencil
We will focus on accurately drawing your plant by focusing on its individual parts. By the end of class you will have a botanical study that is beautiful by itself, or you can use it as a starting point for the Introduction to Botanical Watercolor class the following week.
We will cover the following:
Introduction to botany
Sketching
Shading and value
Cross hatching
Stippling
Mapping out a botanical drawing
February 27
Introduction to Botanical Watercolor
In this class we will focus on the fundamentals of painting plants with watercolor. We will focus on painting techniques (If you want more instruction on drawing, take the botanical drawing class first). If you are a beginner, you will make a botanical study in color. If you are more advanced, or if you work quickly, you may complete a full botanical painting. They are both beautiful!
We will cover the following:
Introduction to botany
Mixing color and creating a palette for your study
Washes
Layers
Shadows
Wet and dry brush techniques
March 6
Paint a Succulent in Watercolor
In this class we will focus on painting a succulent. I will demonstrate each step, and we will all work on the same subject together. By the end of class you will have a complete painting of a succulent plant. If you took the sketching and painting classes earlier in the series, you may work quickly and paint more than one, or you may choose to work slowly and focus on developing your skill and adding detail.
We will cover the following:
The characteristics of a succulent (botany lesson)
Sketching
Composition
Mixing colors
Basic watercolor techniques
March 13
Paint a Mini Plant Portrait
In this class you will choose a plant to paint – I will demonstrate the process, so you can choose the same kind of plant that I am working on, or if you can choose something completely different, it all depends on your skill and comfort level. We will work small so that you will be able to finish and frame your art before you leave! Your finished painting will go into a 5” x 5” wooden frame with a mat board.
We will cover the following:
Introduction to botany
Sketching
Composition
Mixing colors
Basic watercolor techniques
Framing a painting
