Introduction to Botanical Painting
Online course and in-person workshops
I offer online and in-person workshops. The information below describes the online course. To sign up for an in-person workshop, go Here (or click on an option below). If you sign up for my online course, you will be taken to a separate website that is the online learning platform. Please let me know if you have any questions!
What is botanical painting?
Botanical painting can include everything from traditional, rigorous scientific illustration for text books and herbaria, to whimsical flower paintings. In this class we discuss the tradition of scientific illustration, but as this is an introductory class, we cover the basics of the entire process—this is just the beginning of your flower painting journey!
What is covered in the course?
The course covers everything from defining terms, picking your flower and sketching it, to painting it with watercolor, and finally framing your finished piece. The lessons include video, audio (think mini-podcasts) , and downloadable PDFs. Scroll to the bottom of the page to see the lessons.
How long do I have to finish?
The course is pre-recorded, and is offered on an online learning platform, so you can work through the lessons at your own pace. You have access to the course for a minimum of one year (probably longer! you will have access as long as the course is offered). You will also have access to all updates, additions, and bonus lessons as they are added.

Get to know your plant
Learn to see the details when you are looking at plants. Notice the color, the number of petals, and how the leaves are arranged on the stem.
Light and shadow
Your painting will come to life when you pay attention to the light and the shadows.
The course is broken into seven chapters, each with audio, video, and/or written, downloadable, lessons:
